TotalEnergies to Extend French Diesel Discounts Through Winter

TotalEnergies plans to apply changing discounts to diesel and heating fuel in France throughout the winter. Seeking Alpha, citing Bloomberg, reports that CEO Patrick Pouyanne said on Monday that the company will take part in a government-organized release of strategic diesel reserves to lower consumer costs.

The company has already spent about €500M to limit prices at its French service stations. After Monday’s meeting in Paris between officials and fuel retailers, Pouyanne said TotalEnergies intends to keep the lowest-priced retail network in France, potentially even after the crisis. He acknowledged that the price cap had increased the market share of its domestic stations.

Governments worldwide are seeking to soften the cost-of-living crisis as diesel and crude prices climb. Shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have been disrupted, while Ukrainian attacks have struck Russian refineries. Pouyanne also said that elevated refining margins could result in TotalEnergies paying about €600M in French corporate-profit taxes in 2026.
