Downing Street says Brexit result was legitimate despite Russia claims

Prime Minister Andy Burnham considers the 2016 Brexit referendum result “legitimate”, Downing Street told the BBC. A spokesperson said it was “inconceivable” that Russia had not tried to exploit the vote, but maintained that Moscow had failed to affect the outcome.

Speaking on The Rest is Politics podcast, Burnham said he had asked about Russian involvement after entering Downing Street and had received a clear answer: “Yes, there was.” Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called the prime minister a “liar”, while the Conservatives described his wording as, at best, careless and vague. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey supported Burnham’s decision to raise the issue.

Foreign Minister Stephen Doughty declined to give specific details, saying Russia had sought to interfere in several democratic events. A 2020 parliamentary report reached no firm conclusion on Russian intervention in UK elections and referendums, but criticised the government for not fully assessing or countering Russian troll accounts on social media. An independent review published earlier this year also described efforts to weaken confidence in UK democracy.
