US bank earnings set to dominate Tuesday market focus

Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, said the reports should offer clues about the health of the US economy, including consumer spending, loan arrears, business borrowing and credit conditions.

Traders are also expected to examine global M&A activity and whether higher interest rates are reducing advisory income by making mega-cap mergers less likely in the coming months. Brooks said a downbeat view of the US economy could move markets. Bonds might recover and yields fall, but equities could suffer if investors become concerned about recession or weaker growth. The US financial sector has gained only 4% year to date and has fallen by nearly 4% over the past month as bonds sold off and Treasury yields surged.

In the UK, investors will receive trading statements from BP and Michael Page, full-year results from Bellway and YouGov, and results from Whitbread, Bytes Technology and Angling Direct. Oxford Instruments, Integrafin, Ninety One and Reach are also scheduled to publish trading updates.
