Super Micro lifts revenue outlook, but chip stocks recover only modestly

According to Barron's, Super Micro Computer shares rose more than 10% in extended trading on Tuesday after the company said preliminary revenue for its fiscal first quarter, ended September 30, would significantly exceed its earlier forecast. The company now expects $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, versus the previous $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. It also raised its estimated gross-profit margin to 12% to 12.5%.

Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also gained in after-hours trading, while Nvidia, AMD, Micron and Marvell rose about 2%. That relief was limited, though, as chipmakers are still recovering from a steep selloff.

Investors are less worried about whether customers are buying hardware and more about whether the businesses building data centers can earn enough returns to justify the spending.

Super Micro's stronger sales suggest customers are still investing in AI infrastructure, but they do not prove a broader rise in industry chip demand. Pressure on the sector persists due to higher inflation, borrowing costs and debt at AI cloud providers such as CoreWeave. The company will report fiscal first-quarter results on November 3.
