what happened
Nano One, a Canadian process technology firm that develops cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, says its partner Sumitomo Metal Mining has moved further into testing its One-Pot method for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes, according to TradingView. Sumitomo has run its own economic modelling, tested the product and passed One-Pot samples to its customers, who have responded positively.
Based on that modelling, Nano One estimates that the process could cut conversion costs by as much as $1 million a year for every 1,000 tonnes of annual capacity. The samples have reached a pressed density that high-performance cell makers can assess, and work with Sumitomo's battery and automotive clients has started. Several qualification steps must still be completed before any commercial supply.
The two companies also continue discussing a large LFP plant in Canada, but that project depends on customer offtake, project financing and government funding.
why it matters
LFP chemistry is gaining share in battery energy storage, so a cheaper production route matters to cathode suppliers. For investors this is still an early validation stage with no signed offtake, so the news mainly concerns Nano One shareholders and the lithium battery supply chain.
