what happened

Newsmetry API, citing dpa-AFX, reports that Google has launched Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker intended to sit between the screen-free Fitbit Air and the more capable Pixel Watch 5 as Google broadens its Health ecosystem.

The device uses a Hybrid OLED panel with 46% more viewing space than earlier Fitbit trackers. It also has precision GPS, an altimeter and more than 50 workout settings. The tracker can identify as many as 100 activities on its own and provide live coaching via Google Health Coach. Other features include ECG, round-the-clock pulse measurement, skin-temperature readings and Health Guardian tools that track patterns such as blood pressure and insulin resistance.

Google rates endurance at up to seven days, while a five-minute charge is said to support a full day of operation. Fitbit Edge is available to preorder and is scheduled to arrive in stores on October 27. A $219.99 Stephen Curry Special Edition is also planned. Separately, Google announced wider Google Health changes, added functions for Fitbit Air and a women’s-health partnership with Flo Health.

why it matters

The release broadens Google’s wearable lineup and ties hardware more closely to software-based health monitoring. For markets, it highlights the company’s continued push to combine devices, coaching and health-related services within one ecosystem.
